  • Local Dialing Information: As in Canada and the U.S., long-distance numbers in Mexico have a 3-digit city code, followed by a 7-digit local number. For local calls within your area code (376 for the Chapala-Ajijic area), use only the 7-digit number.

  • Long-Distance Dialing: When calling a ground line outside the Chapala-Ajijic area (376), add 01 plus the city/area code before the 7-digit number.

  • International Calls: To call the U.S. and Canada, use the long distance access code (001), then the area code and 7-digit local number.

  • Operator Assistance: call 020 or 01-800-123-2223

  • Emergencies: Call 066 (equivalent to 911 in U.S.)

  • Cell Phone Calls: Lakeside ground line-to-cell calls now require 045 before the area code and 7-digit number. Cell-to-cell calls need only the area code and 7-digit number. “He who calls pays” under newly initiated regulations.

•Toll-Free Dialing: To call a U.S. 800-number listed as toll-free, dial the U.S. long distance code (001) and then 800 and the number. To dial a Mexico 800-number, dial 01-800 and the telephone number.  No charge will appear on your telephone bill. However, not all 800-number calls will go through.  It may be possible to reach the U.S. 800 number using 001-880; however these calls carry a fee (less than the normal long distance rate to the U.S.).
