Using lunar cycles and phases of the moon

Plan activities for best results

By Tarra M. Sabin

Many "home remedies" have been verified as having a sound scientific basis, and there is substantial empirical evidence of the moon's effect on the earth, nature, and humans. Ocean tides, migrations, planting, harvesting, crime rates, violence, birth and death rates, and surgical complications have been proven to be affected by the moon. Also well-documented are changes provoked by the moon in weather, animals, the mentally ill, mentally retarded, young children, and emotionally sensitive people.

All the moon's possible effects are complex, and include much more than the phases (quarters). To keep things simple, we're going to cover the four seven-day phases of the moon and their effects. If you're interested in knowing more, a good place to start is with the web site of Llewellyn Worldwide®, located at www.llewellyn.com.

Here's some basic information about each quarter of the moon. The phases are marked on our calendar.

The First Quarter: begins with the New Moon. This is a time for beginnings and growth, and for drawing things to you. Things tend to "pull together". It's the most propitious time for seeds _ and ideas _ to germinate. This quarter is favorable for putting permanent waves in hair; cutting or trimming hair to increase its thickness; mowing lawns or pruning plants to increase growth; starting construction; finding lost articles; hiring employees; buying clothes; and starting medical treatments. To reduce the risk of hemorrhage with surgery, if possible schedule it within one week before or after a New Moon. After the New Moon _ in the first quarter _ healing is faster. A good time to finalize plans is toward the end of this quarter. Shingles laid during the New Moon will curl at the edges; also, do not paint any thing near the New Moon.

The Second Quarter: begins approximately

seven days into the lunar cycle, and ends with the Full Moon. This quarter signifies growth, development, and expression of things already in existence. It's a good time to add to projects or concentrate on completing those taking shape. It's also favorable for selling animals; buying clothing; designing, repairing, and sewing clothes; having dental work done; having eyes tested, glasses fitted, or beginning eye treatments; lending money; beginning legal matters (but not court dates); making a will; beginning a romance; getting married; trimming hair to increase growth and thickness; mowing lawns to increase growth and thickness; and hiring staff. Timber cut during the first or second quarter will warp and/or split, decay faster, and become worm-eaten. Fence posts set during these quarters will loosen quickly.

The Third Quarter: begins with the Full Moon, the time for completion, illumination, restlessness, and using what we've worked to create. This quarter is favorable for pouring concrete; canning and making jelly and preserves; cutting timber and fence posts; setting fence posts; demolishing structures; transplanting; weeding gardens; filling teeth; fitting and making dentures; harvesting crops, especially grain for storage; drying food or crops; asking for a loan; buying goods; trimming hair to slow growth; mowing lawns and pruning plants to slow growth; pruning fruit trees, bushes, and vines to promote better fruit; building a roof; ending relationships; firing staff (but not on day of Full Moon); brewing; and starting a diet to lose weight. The best sauerkraut is made just after the Full Moon. Mushrooms should be gathered at the Full Moon. The day after the Full Moon is the best time of any month for fishing. Avoid the Full Moon for having teeth removed, or breeding animals. Avoid the week before and the week after the Full Moon for spaying, neutering, or de-clawing animals.

The Fourth Quarter: begins around the 21st day of the lunar cycle. This is a time of disintegration, drawing back for reorganizing, reflection on what has passed, and clearing out and ridding yourself of what is no longer needed or wanted. It's time to make room for the new coming in with the next lunar cycle. This quarter is good for brewing; canning, making preserves and jellies; cultivating to prepare for planting at the New Moon; cutting timber and fence posts; setting fence posts; starting compost; using organic fertilizers (like compost); breaking bad habits; stopping smoking; ending bad relationships; harvesting crops; spraying and weeding; borrowing money; cutting hair to slow growth; pruning and mowing to decrease growth; building a roof; firing staff; and starting a diet to lose weight. This is the best quarter for painting, as the paint will penetrate better and dry faster (except on a rainy day).
